Tunnel For The Cause 2006

For the second year, SkyVenture Orlando will play host to Tunnel For The Cause inOctober, breast cancer awareness month.

TFTC is a two part event: Friday there will be coaching for a $50 donation (this year we are hoping to include every tunnel and coach that is willing to hop on board) and Saturday we will hold the Female and Fellas FreeFly Fest.

The Pink Mafia Tunnel Sisters had the honor & pleasure of being the personal guests of Rob & Laurie at SkyVenture New Hampshire this past weekend for fun, flying & fellowship.

Laurie & her crew rolled out the PINK carpet, and led us lovely ladies plus 1 (Myself, Paige, Laura Kraus & Rox Cox plus Danager) on a complete tour of the facility from rooftop to basement, treated us with several amazing flight sessions, and included us as if we were a part of their family. I can't say enough, for our entire group, how WONDERFUL this crew & facility really is.

As I walked around during our tour the words 'spared no expense' kept coming to my mind as Laurie described to us the processes involved with completing this particular facility and the finishing touches that were being added as she spoke. It was obvious to myself then, and I believe the entire group, how dedicated Laure & her crew are to making this the BEST POSSIBLE VWT facility that it could possibly be.. not only catering the skydivers & tunnel flyers, but professionals, children, tourists and yes.. even Tunnelrats!

We welcomed 3 NEW Tunnel Sisters this weekend and also did the FIRST EVER DOUBLE BARBIE DOCK!
Erin Grant, Stacey Geesey and yes.. wait for it... >>>>> LAURIE WASS <<<<< . Erin & Stacey did a traditional induction with Paige (in a not so traditional pink wig) and OGB, and I joined in on Laurie's induction for the Double Barbie Dock & Kiss pass (without the pass)

Now... onto the nitty gritty!!
The tunnel... is awesome... as you would expect: fast, smooth, with quick response on the controls.

The chamber was filled with daylight, courtesy of floor to ceiling windows on the 2nd floor of the building, which is a big plus for those like myself who prefer to see the sky when we fly , and at night a few twinkling lights from the center of town!

LUDICROUS Speed is ACTUALLY labeled on the control panel for the tunnel... ok.. so I'm kidding about that but on a serious note this and I'm guesing future SV tunnels are capable of speeds that are just ridiculous fast... gone are the days we should need to ask "what is the top speed of the tunnel?" and for those who require a number to process speed... let me say that I believe the top speed readout I personally saw with my own eyes was 149 while someone was flying in the chamber. Now... for most people... that is just way too fast... but for those speed junkies out there, lets just say.. there was plenty more where that came from, not that anyone will ever need it.

I'm tickled PINK to say that it was no problem for Laurie to let me fly in my long sleeved T & Jeans as I prefer to do, and Laurie didn't require me to use a Barbie harness either... I'm honored to have been trusted & treated so well.

So the tunnel is awesome! Go there... at your earliest convenience! You won't regret it!

About the area:
Nashua is a cute little town! They have everything and it's all on the main road next to the tunnel.
We at at the Takumi Sushi/Steak/Hibatchi place, UNOs Chicago Grill, Chile's, La Hacienda (not as good) and Dunkin Donuts several times...

The red roof inn was acceptable for housing... very close by, clean, newly remodeled, Tmobile hotspot $10 bucks a day or $20 bucks for 7 days. If you want a room with a fridge, make sure to ask for one.

WE flew into Boston at Logan (40 miles), which I found easy to navigate and actually quick moving (compared to LAX, Ohare, MCO, Mcarren & ATL) but the nearest airport is Manchester (20 miles). I usually fly Delta but Southwest has good deals apparently to Manchester.

Rox and I are flying into Boston at 12:10am where we will get a cab & check into the hotel. We can be available to meet Airport pickups on Friday via Subway or hotel Shuttle Service and then we'll all party in Boston for the night.
Partying this evening will be taking place at Faneuil Hall Marketplace (www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com) a collection of shops/carts & outdoor performers. Boston is easily traveled by foot & the "T" a rail/bus/subway system that covers the entire city. We can all feel safe about getting a little silly since no one will be driving.

Saturday August 5th

We can all get up, pick up a car from Enterprise and head over to Nashua (1 hour away) and arrange for tunnel time Saturday Afternoon & Evening..

Airport: Logan Airport in Boston is the place to fly into if your doing the Boston part of our trip too! It's 47 miles from Nashua and about 1 hour. Also.. check www.kayak.com for the best airline fare search engine I've ever found!
ALSO check airfare to Manchester (MHT) a Municipal Airport about 20 minutes from the tunnel. My fares were much more expensive but if your skipping the Boston part of our trip.. you can get in more directly here.

Video Services: Shane Tully aka WindWorX Productions, INC. http://www.windworxproductions.com will be with us on this trip creating a commemorative DVD of our TPM time in NH. Some footage could potentially be used in his upcoming VWT Documentary too so.. let's support Shane. Because he has volunteered for this, is excited about doing it and will be paying his own way to get there.. I feel that we should budget $10 each to give to Shane to help with the costs of his trip and for the materials needed to create and mail a DVD to each of us.

A tunnel flying event raising money for Anita Sanders new not for profit organization dedicated to eliminating the feral cat population of Orlando Florida, Spay The Strays, Inc. Anita was kind enough to round up the tunnel cats, spay or neuter them, and return them to the tunnel. We LOVE our tunnel kitties and are hoping to spread a positive light on Anita’s amazing organization w. the success of this event.

Join us for discounted tunnel time, coaching, and a day of cat adoptions!

.::June 23rd 2006 - Coaching for Donations::.
8:30 pm - 9:30 pm (4 slots available, 15 minutes each)
11:00 pm – 12:00 am (4 slots available, 15 minutes each)

A few of the best SkyVenture Orlando staff, Bowen, Chris, Dan(ager), Ed, and Randy, are donating coaching for ONLY $20 per 15 minute session! This $20 for coaching is also a donation to Spay The Strays and a tax write off.

Cost of a 15 minute session will be $10.84 a minute (x15= $162.60) + $20 for coaching. Grand total for 15 minutes of time and coaching= $182.60.

Current rate for tunnel time is $200 for a 15-minute block and $50-75 for coaching: grand total $250-275. For helping Spay The Strays, you save around $100!

Get ready for 2 way, 3 way, big way, hybrid, free flying fun!!!! ALL skill levels are welcome (we need more belly flyers too for super fun hybrids, come join the fun everyone)!!!!

My goal for the event is to have each flyer learn new skills, have a great time, and do something you’ve never done in the tunnel before (safely of course).

Costs for the Freefly Festival of Fun will be: (at most) $217 for 2 hours of flight time! THAT’S $1.80 A MINUTE!!!!!!!! If we fill all 12 slots, time will only cost $130 a person! You won’t find tunnel time cheaper than this. The event costs a wee bit more than a 15-minute block!

We have so many amazing flyers in the area and we can all learn and support one another (even better, charities too) through events like this. Aside from sharing our knowledge, experiences, vibes, and smiles, we are helping an incredible organization (Spay The Strays) and everyone can feel great about that!

Think TPM pseudo Naughty Cupid Boogie/Pink Party but in Vegas and at a tunnel - I've got hearts, cupids, arrows, and art deco Valentine's graphics to stick up all over with some pink and white streamers. I’ll supply tape, scissors, and decorations if you lend a hand I’d owe you big time!

That's right, Carrie and I are going to Las Vegas for some TPM Madness! February 9th - 12th, 2006. Whooooooo! I'll be offering TPM inductions all day on Friday February 10th and Saturday February 11th at Flyaway located behind Walgreen’s on the strip.

Induction Stories

As a TPM delegate, I'm always looking for ways to improve the inductions. If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to have you girlies sharing your induction stories with us (doesn't have to be an SVO induction, please SHARE THEM ALL ), so other curious girls can learn, and so we can continue to grow as an organization, I'd appreciate it.

I know every induction I have is VERY special and I hope each girl I induct knows that. I have formed lasting friendships w. many of the girls I have inducted and look forward to many new friends in the coming year.

So please, share your induction story with us, what made your induction memorable, what you didn't really like, etc.

After flying we’ll premier the video that Allen Wilson has spent many, many, many hours editing and coordinating for us.

Please bring friends, the more the merrier! There will be plenty of food and drink to go around. We’ll have to kick back and relax after our flight w. a few cold ones.

What is the Tunnel Pink Mafia?
Following the tradition of the Pink Mafia Sisters (a female skydiving organization http://www.ThePinkMafia.com), the Tunnel Pink Mafia http://www.TunnelPinkMafia.com was founded in May 2005 with the intent to bond female tunnel flyers, promote flying in our communities, and express our passion for human flight.

How do I become a Tunnel Pink Mafia Sister?
Lady flyers of all disciplines and skill levels are welcome to join the sisterhood. There is a simple initiation process required to achieve a TPM membership number. The flyer must dock on a Barbie doll in the tunnel with one of the delegates during their initiation flight.

Paige Rudolph is currently initiating new sisters SkyVenture Orlando. She also plans to visit ALL of the tunnels to spread the TPM love to new and existing sisters! Host: Tunnel Pink Mafia's SoCal division presents "Wigs on Fire" a skydiving, tunnel flying, hair cutting event for The Locks of Love Foundation.

Location: Skydive Elsinore 2/18/06
Skyventure Perris 2/19/06
(We can hit both of our favorite SoCal DZs this weekend!)

When: President's Day weekend 2/18/06 - 2/19/06
(The 17th and the 20th can be travel days for the ladies from out of the state.)

Why: To donate hair to be made into wigs for children with alopecia, cancer and other medical hair loss. Hair donations must be 10" in length or more and kept in a ponytail or braid when donated. Hair must not be gray. It can be colored, but it cannot be damaged.

~ A special prize will be given to the person, who donates the most hair in length. ~

What: Skydive at Skydive Elsinore with free coaching by Elsinore's Excel coaches is offered all weekend. Jonathan Tagle's Flight-1 canopy skills course will also be offered this weekend. (Must pre-register for this camp.) Hair cutting/styling by Crystal for Locks of Love will take place right on the DZ (Elsinore). Pink Mafia sky initiations are available, as well, by Melanie Curtis. A skills seminar will take place on Saturday evening with pizza (or other food) and more possible night time fun...stay tuned!

Skyventure Perris tunnel sessions to take place on Sunday, 2/19/06. RW and freefly/freestyle sessions are both available, either for coached mini-camps or for more casual tunnel mixers. Just let us know, and we'll set it up. First time body flyers and first time tunnel visitors are welcome to join us, and the Barbie helmet is back for Tunnel Pink Mafia initiations.

Party: We will be having a party on one of the nights mentioned and the theme will be "Wigs on Fire". We encourage the wearing of wild or sexy WIGS and HATS. There will be mucho grooving to the music and plenty of jello shots to be had.

Just be there: Hair donations for Locks of Love are desired, but not necessary to join in on the fun of the weekend. We encourage men, as well as the women, to donate or to join in on our flying or night-time fun.

In my experiences, I've had much success w. female coaches flying tips. We fly differently than men but I think that's what makes female flying so fantastic; grace, beauty (we look damn good in jump suits ), flexability, & our feminine touches to this male dominated sport. I hope that some of my tips help you out in the tunnel. I had and still have many struggles, I hope what I went through can make your tunnel flying learning curve a little easier.
