Are there any decent portable wind tunnels available and ok, I know "decent" is a highly subject thing - but what I mean is, that can generate a fairly smooth and laminar airflow at speeds capable of supporting 100kg person without a baggy suit. I.e. there a "mini"-AAC or a "mini"-Skyventure etc out there? Dawn, if you're out there .. you might be the best person to ask this question?

To this day there is no such thing as laminar flow out of a portable tunnel.. the two just do not go together (sans an invention from the South Africans which could prove to be just what your looking for if it ever happens)

What do you need clean or smooth air for though anyway? Who cares!!  Air is Air man and if it's capable of sustaining ANY type of human flight, it's awesome!!!  I would choose a crappy portable aka. Prop Jobbie tunnel over some of these new "laminar" type tunnels anyday...

outside and in the sky...  that is the way to be!

Ahh you see .. I am obviously an air snob! (do you have the word snob is the states?) .. I want clean fast air and am not that interested in anything less. But, there are reasons .. I am a heavy guy .. and I won't get off the net without it. I had a bad experience at a tunnel last year, went a long way and didn't get much out of it in terms of flying because or airspeed and big dead zones in the air .. ofcourse the people I met made up for it .. but it would have been a lot better had the flying been so. I've lost my link to these new portable ones that are supposedly on the way .. what's the name of the South African company Dawn?

James, BUMMER! No snobbiness on my part! If it is at least 75 mph I will try as hard as I can to fly on it. Air is Air! But then again I am 145 lbs wet so I really can't complain! It is aerodynamics I tell you! Anyway James, I am not Dawn but I will answer cuz I beat her here, the South African Company is www.freefallers.com Freefallers Inc. in South Africa, and Duncan Cramer is the guy. I wish they would hurry up, and move it along, I would love to see something like that on the market. WE NEED a REALLY GOOD portable system somewhere in the world Oh yeah did I say portable??? I meant quiet and portable! LOL!!

75 Mph!! ... My helmet wouldn't get off the net in that wind speed, let alone me. That was not a sexual reference btw!

Air snob huh James?
Wow...I would've not guessed that!

Don't worry.. someday you should be able to fly on lower speeds..  what you lose in airspeed you can make up for in suit!  I've known some pretty big guys flying on slow slow air...Once you get the hang of it and learn to fly a suit sometimes too...you can do almost anything!

Don't remember if you jump much.. but learning to fly at slow speeds will also help you be a better skydiver believe it or not.  You'll have to learn to fly big big big and still steer and be in control!  This technique can help you slow down in the sky drastically and say goodbye to being an "Anvil" brother type!

Start by having them turn the air down a few mph each session... get you a coach that knows how to fly WELL at slow speeds...find a larger suit.... you'll be suprised.  They can teach you how to maximize your lift... something I'm not sure too many skydiver tunnel coaches worry about since they are all trying to go FASTER.. not slower!

I'd like to be the first one to make a 50 second jump last 75 seconds!  As scott miller once told me in re: to skydiving.. the faster you go.. the quicker it's over!  Your PAYING the same either way... don't rush through it.. don't be in a hurry to land..enjoy the flight.

Most of my flying to date has been flat and enjoy being able to move round with absolute (ok maybe not) precision when I'm doing that.. I love being able to fly at full speed and stopping on a dime or doing turns and transitions fast and stopping exactly where I want to. I like flying sharp. To do this at the moment means using my same old tried and trust suit.. because that's what I'm used to flying. You are probably right I should try flying something else more often... Mind you the last few times I've been flying in a big baggy suit without booties to develop control and precision in that too (and ofcourse to do some limited freeflying)... so I'm on my way.

I think teaching people (or encouraging people) to fly in a wide variety of different suits to get a really broad feeling for the air is a good idea and should perhaps be part of a progression path.

Check out some portable tunnel pics I took on 3-21-06. We parked it at Skydive DeLand for some fun flying.
